Kleeer

About Kleeer

Kleeer were a New York-based funk band that placed a dozen singles on the Billboard R&B chart from 1979 through 1985. Headed by drummer, arranger, songwriter, and vocalist Woody Cunningham, the band's original form took shape in 1972 to support vocal group the Choice Four and later recorded with Universal Robot Band and as Pipeline. "Keeep Your Body Workin'," the first song they cut under the name Kleeer, resulted in a contract with Atlantic that produced seven albums and a series of minor R&B and club hits. Despite never attaining crossover success on the level of contemporaries like Cameo and the Gap Band, they built a rich discography that skillfully took funk from elegant and organic to sleek and synthesized. ~ Andy Kellman
