Sonzeira

About Sonzeira

A super session arranged by BBC DJ Gilles Peterson -- a champion of Brazilian music since his time as a pirate radio broadcaster -- Sonzeira involved legends, underrecognized veterans, and younger contemporary musicians alike. Aiming to present a modern-sounding album with allegiance to the country's many sounds, Peterson went to Rio and, in January 2014, gathered the likes of Elza Soares, Naná Vasconcelos, Marcos Valle, Ed Motta, Seu Jorge, and Alexandre Kassin. On Record Story Day 2014, the project was previewed via 7" with a radical interpretation of Freeez's 1981 Brit funk classic "Southern Freeez," fronted by Emanuelle Araújo. The album, Brasil Bam Bam Bam, was released that June through Talkin' Loud/Virgin EMI. It was the first release on Peterson's Talkin' Loud in over a decade. ~ Andy Kellman
