Albenrezension

In the early '70s, altoist/arranger David Hutson formed the New McKinney's Cotton Pickers to perform and expand upon Don Redman's charts for the original McKinney's Cotton Pickers of 1927-31. He dug up one original member, banjoist Dave Wilborn, who although he was no longer playing, was still a decent singer in his mid-60s. The 12-piece band recorded three LPs for the Bountiful label from 1972-75 (none yet reissued on CD) and were one of the first revival orchestras to focus on the 1920s. For their second album, the band (which at the time included altoist Ted Buckner, cornetists Tom Saunders and Paul Klinger and a variety of Detroit-based musicians) performs such numbers as "Peggy," "If I Could Be with You," "You're Driving Me Crazy" and "The Sheik of Araby." Some of the arrangements were taken off of records and utilized the original charts, while a few are newer ones in the style. An intriguing and highly enjoyable ensemble.
