Integrating iPads into the Classroom

Course Description

This course is designed to introduce educators at all levels to the iPad, while also helping them understand how to successfully integrate the iPad into teaching and learning environments.

Welcome to Integrating iPads into the Classroom

Over 1.5 million iPads are currently in use in educational institutions, which includes over 1,000 one-to-one programs.  Nearly every week, another school makes the headlines by implementing an iPad-to-student program.  For many, such technology integration programs make perfect sense:
  • Technology is a tool, which can facilitate problem-based learning.
  • Technology is engaging, and students are motivated by such engagement.
  • Students are “digital natives” and live in a world that expects to use technology.
  • Parents and community members want to see students use the latest technology for learning.
Such reasons offer support for implementing a one-to-one iPad program, yet for many educators a fundamental question remains:  now what?  Now that students in my classroom have an iPad, what am I going to do to use the tablets in my teaching?  Some educators feel fear, apprehension, frustration, and perhaps even anger, as they hear that their school is one of the programs.  Others are excited about the prospect of what iPads will do for teaching and learning in their classroom.  Still others have mixed feelings, possessing some excitement that is paired with a dose of apprehension.

Regardless of your perspective for one-to-one iPad programs, it is probable that you have decided to view this course to become more familiar with how to integrate iPads into your classroom.  Such integration includes two key elements:
  • Training on how to technologically use an iPad
  • Training on how to use an iPad for classroom learning.
To this end, the purpose of this course is twofold and will focus on each of the two aforementioned areas.  Namely, this will include technological skills training (i.e., how to use an iPad) and technology integration training (i.e., how to integrate an iPad into classroom learning).
