Season 1, Episode 2: Bret Gives Up the Dream
Desperate for cash, and with their band-fund box nearly empty, Bret and Jemaine decide to get jobs. Only Bret is successful--he gets a job holding up signs during the day, a problem since Jemaine refuses to practice at night. With his sign-holding skills being rewarded, and with a cute protege named Coco hanging on his every move, Bret finds he has less and less time to devote to the band. When Murray books the Conchords at a daytime trade show, Bret can't get off work, so Jemaine is forced to play the gig with a replacement member: a tape recording of Bret. The new configuration isn't a total disaster, and it does solve the band-uniform issue (since there's only one band member), but ends up fizzling when the tape breaks and Bret won't make a new one. Jemaine and Murray end up auditioning a group of Bret wanna-bes before turning to the genuine article with a compromise that might bring Bret back on board.

Season 1, Episode 3: Mugged
Bret loses Jemaine's trust after leaving his mate to die in the street at the hands of a 'gang' of two. After Jemaine and John (one of the muggers) are jailed, Jemaine can't forgive Bret until he risks his life (sort of) to retrieve his pal's camera phone (a phone with a camera taped to it) that was stolen in the earlier robbery.

Season 1, Episode 4: Yoko
Murray is perturbed when Bret cancels a band tour of building rotundas to be with his girlfriend Coco. Things get worse when Jemaine follows suit, choosing to be an active participant (or third wheel, depending on your POV) on Bret and Coco's dates. All goes well for a while--Jemaine even offers constructive revisions to Bret's two-hour love song to Coco--but eventually Bret asks his mate to leave him alone, at least during his dates. Jemaine's subsequent dismay, coupled with the betrayal felt by the band's lone fan, Mel (who has a crush on Bret), threatens the band's future. When Coco sits in on a band meeting (bringing sandwiches and a cool Conchords poster), Jemaine accuses her of being Yoko-esque, prompting Bret's angry departure. Ultimately, recognizing his partner is indispensable, Jemaine tracks down Bret to ask him back in the band--under one condition.

- FOLGE 5
Season 1, Episode 5: Sally Returns
With Bret preoccupied with Coco, a lonely Jemaine visits the laundromat--and runs into Sally, the 'most beautiful girl in the room,' who dumped him (and Bret) earlier this year. Envisioning a new life with Sally--including making 'Business Time' with her every Wednesday night--Jemaine's dreams take a detour when he learns she won't spend time with him until he gets his own place. After attending a band meeting in which Murray reveals he's used their retirement fund to invest in 'real estate,' Jemaine moves into a 'studio compartment' in a fancy doorman building, and plans a space-warming party. Unfortunately, the date of his bash conflicts with Sally's birthday, and Bret, who reveals he's still in love with Sally, forsakes Jemaine's party in favor of Sally's, where he trumps Jemaine with a special hand-crafted gift. As Jemaine cuts short his festivities to head over to Sally's party, both suitors are in for the shock of their lives (well, maybe just a shock).
