At a brutal firebomb-attack the owners of a conveyance, Matt and James Parkes, die. Sadly they were not very popular in Midsomer county and Barnaby finds more than one person that had unmet expectations with the brothers.
Two couples disappear without a trace in Monks Barton. Are on antique specialised burglars responsible for the disappearance?
The case of a murdered constructor ends very well for assistant Jones – in a flirt.
Inspector Barnaby finds it very complicated, since there are so many suspects. Is he still capable to bring light into the dark?

One morning the corpse of Nick Chevney is found in Magna Manor. The producer did shoot a movie about the French Revolution. Just before he died, he met his two ex-girlfriends on the set: the actress Gwen and Leonie, the daughter of the manor-house owner, whom he once left behind pregnant.Strangely Barnaby meets no one but Gwen, who is sad because of Nick’s death.

The case seems to be more complicated than first thought because the Parkes were not really popular in the village. Waitress Layla Barkham was blackmailed by James because of her dingy sideline, her father George works for the Parkes and always gets disappointed in his hope of promotion. Inspector Barnaby is more than wanted.

All at once two of the other missed appear: Molly Thomas, shot in her bedroom and Stan Goodfellow, lunatic and not capable of speaking a word. Barnaby finds the answer to the case on a sidetrack: The trace leads to a ring of burglars, specialized on antiquary.

The activist Lynne Fox finds the corpse of Ron and Libby Wilson while she is collecting signatures. Shortly after, the constructor Jack Purdy is murdered. While the village truly bemoans the Wilsons, no one cries a tear for Jack. Just his ex-wife, who is about to marry his brother Mark, seems to be sad. Assistant Jones has his chance to get useful – as the best man and while flirting with photographer Charlotte Knight.
