Swedish blues-rock star Louise Hoffsten released 6 in 1996 to the typically warm homeland response and the just-as-typical cool American reaction. A passionate vocalist, Hoffsten bursts through 12 bluesy but aggressive and sexy cuts on 6. Standouts include the hook-laden "Explain It to My Heart" and the powerful blues romp "Miracle." The music on this disc ranges from the saucy blues-rock Hoffsten built her reputation on and some more sugary pop numbers vaguely similar to fellow Nordic pop/rockers the Cardigans. The down-temp "Healing Rain" adds a nice country vibe, proving Hoffsten's melodic range (there's even a few choice yodels) and overall musical command. Fortunately, Hoffsten's strong Euro fan base took to this release — the same way they have embraced the singer's recordings throughout the '90s — as 6, like other strong efforts from the songstress, barely made a blip on the musical radar stateside. No matter where they reside, listeners who enjoy Hoffsten and her sultry rock recordings will approve of this strong collection, representative of the artist's many talents.
