Album Review

For this quartet outing, expatriate American pianist Horace Parlan teams up with three talented Europeans: baritonist Per Goldschmidt, bassist Klavs Hovman and drummer Massimo de Majo. While Hovman and de Majo mostly play in support, Goldschmidt's solos often take honors. Parlan, Goldschmidt and Hovman contributed all seven of the selections, which are straight-ahead but reasonably adventurous. A fine effort.

Horace Parlan overcame physical disability and thrived as a pianist despite it. His right hand was partially disabled by polio in his childhood, but Parlan made frenetic, highly rhythmic right-hand phrases part of his characteristic style, contrasting them with striking left-hand chords.
