Little Spark

Little Spark

The rhythmic radiance peppering Little Spark comes from legendary A-list session drummer Jim Keltner. He and the similarly notable guitarist Waddy Wachtel and pedal steel master Greg Leisz help give these songs a more timeless quality than those from Baylin’s 2008 debut, Firesight. “Hurry Hurry” opens like a time capsule of bygone Nashville countrypolitan pop, with Baylin’s honeyed voice lilting over gossamer string arrangements courtesy of Richard Swift. “Love Is Wasted on Lovers” gets more nostalgic, with a soulful sound that harks back to a time when Carole King and Gerry Goffin were churning out gold records. That Brill Building sound is further explored on the beautifully constructed “The Greatest Thing That Never Happened,” where bells and a horn section perfectly punctuate the song’s buoyant melody. The layered and reverberant “Star Cannon” conjures the spirits of L.A.’s Gold Star Studios with a wall-of-sound orchestration.
