This 1976 release is the album every other male/female country duo wishes they could make. Ironically, by that time George Jones and Tammy Wynette wished the same—it was recorded just before their much-publicised wreck of a divorce. And while odes to domestic bliss like the title track and “Near You” are delivered with an unparalleled match of emotion and elegance, tearjerkers like “I’ve Seen Better Days” and the Buck Owens cover “Cryin’ Time” gain even greater impact with the benefit of hindsight.

By most accounts, George Jones was the finest vocalist in the recorded history of country music. In the course of his career, he never left the top of the country charts, even as he suffered innumerable personal and professional difficulties. Only Eddy Arnold had more Top Ten hits, and Jones always stayed closer to the roots of hardcore country....
