Album Review

Trombone/piano duet albums are not overly common, but they tend to be quite successful. Trombonist Jiggs Whigham, an American who moved to Germany years ago, and German pianist Wolfgang Köhler make for an ideal matchup. While Whigham is usually in the lead, Köhler is also a fine soloist and an excellent accompanist, and serves quite expertly as the full rhythm section. The relaxed outing features Whigham's subtle wit, a variety of warm moods and tempos, and a solo spot for Köhler on Bix Beiderbecke's "In a Mist." Everything works well.

A major trombonist who is quite versatile, Jiggs Whigham has thus far not received the recognition that he deserves, possibly because he has spent a lot of time performing in Germany. After graduating from high school in 1961, Whigham joined the Glenn Miller Ghost Orchestra (under the direction of Ray McKinley) and in 1963 became a member of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.
