Lotti was an highly prolific composer from Venice or Hanover. The genres in which he composed included operas, oratorios, secular cantatas, numerous masses, works for chorus, motets and psalms, and compositions for solo voices. His instrumental works also included concertos, synphoniae, sonatas, and trios. As a student of Legrenzi, Lotti became the organist at St Mark's, Venice in 1690. He was master of the chapel in 1736 and simultaneously also taught at the Ospedale degli Incurabili where Galuppi was one of his students. Successfully commissioned by both institutions, Lotti composed sacred music for both places. The majority of his sacred compositions use no instrumental acompaniment and a great deal of his music was performed regularly many years after his death. Lotti was an exceptional craftsman and adept with at counterpoint. ~ Keith Johnson
