About Poirier

With a wide-ranging style that draws from dancehall and soca to grime and hip-hop, Poirier is an electronic dance music DJ/producer from Montreal who garnered critical acclaim upon joining the Ninja Tune roster in the late 2000s. Born Ghislain Poirier, he made his full-length recording debut with the album Il N'y a Pas de Sud on the label 12k in 2001. In subsequent years, he released albums on the labels Intr_version (Sous le Manguier, 2002; Conflits, 2003), and Chocolate Industries (Beats as Politics, 2003; Breakupdown, 2005), not to mention a bunch of 12" singles, one-off compilation tracks, and remixes on a variety of other underground labels. Poirier's big break came when he was offered a chance to record for Ninja Tune, one of the electronic dance community's longest running and most respected labels. He made his debut on the label with the Blazin' EP in 2007, followed by the full-length album No Ground Under in 2008. He released a trio of EPs on Ninja Tune in 2009, namely Soca Sound System, Run the Riddim, and Low Ceiling. His second full-length album on the label, Running High (2010), was a double-disc effort that compiled previously released EP tracks along with new material and remixes. ~ Jason Birchmeier
