Following 2001’s First Daze Here, 2006’s First Daze Here Too is the second chapter of unearthed recordings from the pioneering doom-metal band Pentagram. Part two finds the group trying to make its sludgy sound a bit more accessible. More Blue Cheer than Black Sabbath, the album opens with “Wheel of Fortune,” recorded live in the studio in June 1974 at the National Sound Warehouse in Springfield, Va. The following “When the Spring Comes” (from the same session) digs more into the band’s penchant for blasting doom metal with guitars cranked and resonating in the genre’s prerequisite diminished E chord. But then a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb” interrupts the foreboding eeriness, slightly recalling Blue Cheer’s psychedelic rendition of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” There’s also a curious cover of The Yardbirds’ “Little Games,” which may have been another attempt at appealing to label executives. Of course Pentagram is at its best when being itself, as evidenced by such creepy tunes as “Virgin Death” and the menacing “Be Forewarned.”
