Like any of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band's previous records, Because of You is an engaging collection of Dixieland and New Orleans jazz standards, written by the likes of Earl Hines, Louis Cottrell, and Sammy Cahn. What makes this special is the spotlight on Narvin Kimball, the group's oldest member. Kimball sings many of these songs, most of which are love songs, and his performances give the album a warm, appealing quality, even if his singing isn't technically perfect.

Although New Orleans' traditional jazz scene had many top players in the 1950s, there was no one center for the city's veteran greats to play. In 1961, local art dealer Larry Borenstein opened a building in the French Quarter called Preservation Hall.
