It was pleading requests from their legion of fans (known as “lightbulbs”) that inspired Anthem Lights to record acoustic versions of fan favorites from the CCM quartet’s eponymous 2011 debut album. And though the band has swapped electric guitars for acoustic ones, Anthem Lights: The Acoustic Sessions EP plays with all the polished production of their prior recordings. A stripped-down version of “Can’t Shut Up” opens the EP. What’s immediately noticeable is how flawlessly each of the four members sings—whether individually or in harmony, they nail each part with utter precision. Similarly, in this guitar-and-piano reworking, “Circles" leaves plenty of room for the guys to let their vocals soar. (The string section tagged onto the end is an elegant touch.) “Can’t Get Over You” sticks close to the original ballad, with each member taking turns crooning. Anthem Lights cover dcTalk’s “In the Light,” turning the tune into their own thanks in big part to an incredibly soulful cameo sung by Jamie Grace.
