iTunes Editors' Notes

Although pianist Richie Ray may have been the first to use the term boogaloo to describe the frenetic fusion of mambo and R&B that swept through New York’s Puerto Rican communities in the mid-‘60s, bandleader Pete Rodriguez was arguably the leading exponent of that style. The thrillingly propulsive sides that Rodriguez cut for the New York imprint Alegre are—along with the output of bandleaders like Joe Cuba, Johnny Pacheco, and Mongo Santamaria—some of the finest boogaloo recordings in existence. Rodriguez’s 1967 hit “I Like It Like That” remains the definitive boogaloo anthem and was the most memorable of the small handful of boogaloo singles that crossed over into the pop market. The Alegre LP that Rodriguez recorded to capitalize on the success of “I Like It Like That” is as invigorating as its namesake. There are a few other surefire dance tunes here in the mold of the title track, but the real standouts are the inspired instrumental workouts that grace tracks like “Pete’s Madness” and give Rodriguez—a perennially underrated pianist—a chance to show off his considerable instrumental chops.
