Album Review

In 1972 Robert Charlebois terminated his contract with the Quebec record company Gamma to sign with the French Barclay. Thus began an endless series of repackages by both labels to attract the customers to the period of Charlebois they owned. Les Grands Succès de Robert Charlebois (The Greatest Hits of Robert Charlebois, but the stickers on the LPs say Album Double Charlebois) was released in 1972 by Gamma. A two-LP set, it culls 18 tracks previously available on the albums the singer recorded for the label between 1967 and 1971: Robert Charlebois, Robert Charlebois Louise Forestier, Québec Love, Un Gars Ben Ordinaire, and Robert Charlebois [aka Le Mont Athos]. The singer's two most influential songs from that period, "Lindberg" and "Ordinaire," open and close the set. In between one finds a hodgepodge of remarkable and forgettable tracks sequenced following no discernible logical pattern. Surprisingly, most of the groundbreaking Robert Charlebois Louise Forestier was ignored in order to focus on more humorous (and pop-oriented) numbers like "Madame Bertrand" and "Miss Pepsi." ~ François Couture, Rovi

He also acted in a few TV series at the beginning of his career and as a businessman revolutionized the world of Quebec micro-breweries...
