Album Review

On drummer Billy Drummond's debut as a leader he is joined by his wife, pianist Renee Rosnes, alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, and unrelated bassist Ray Drummond to perform three Rosnes originals, five jazz classics, and one standard. Billy Drummond, a former member of the jazz collective OTB, with Rosnes and Wilson, and who has since worked with jazz greats Joe Henderson and Bobby Hutcherson, displays the versatility and energy that has made him a first-call musician since he moved to New York, contributing two well-played solos on Thelonius Monk's "San Francisco Holiday/Worry Later" and Ornette Coleman's "Happy House," played as a sax-bass-drums trio. In addition to her original compositions, Rosnes contributes a memorable solo on Hutcherson's "8/4 Beat," and her Hancock-influenced playing shines throughout this recording. Other favorites include Walter Bishop, Jr.'s lovely "Waltz for Sweetie" and Rosnes' "Lexicon," an up-tempo burner. This is a fine debut by one of jazz's best young drummers.
