Laura Nyro’s stunning second album contains some of her best-known songs, later covered by other artists. “Eli’s Comin’”—a 1969 hit for Three Dog Night—opens with spooky organ and intimate crooning and then explodes into ebullient soul-pop fuelled by whooping brass and Nyro’s sprightly piano. The 5th Dimension took “Sweet Blindness” and "Stoned Soul Picnic” up, up and away, but Nyro’s original versions are a revelation, driven by sashaying rhythms, splashing tambourine, pealing bah-bah-bahs, sensual lyrics and her joyously untethered vocals.
