Frankie Yankovic was one of the most popular polka bandleaders of the '40s and '50s. Yankovic taught himself how to play the accordion when he was a child. At the age of 15, he began playing professionally. Soon, he was leading one of the most popular polka bands in the country. He was at the peak of his popularity at the end of the '40s, when his version of the Czechoslovakian song "Blue Skirt Waltz" was a hit single. Although they never sold many records, Yankovic and his band continued to perform into the '70s, selling out concerts across the United States. He died October 14, 1998. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
