About King Kong

In 1989, original Squirrel Bait/Slint bassist Ethan Buckler moved his music in a wildly new direction. He recruited bassist Willie McClean and drummer Ray Rizzo (later incorporating the keyboards of Todd Hildreth, the drums of fellow Slint alum Dave Pajo, and vocals from Suki Anderson and Amy Greenwood) and, inspired by bands like the B-52’s and Beat Happening, set out to make lo-fi indie-funk records with abstract concepts and herky-jerky dance rhythms. Their debut, OLD MAN ON THE BRIDGE, was released via one-time Squirrel Bait imprint Homestead, although Chicago label would go on to distribute the bulk of their discography, including the evolution-themed FUNNY FARM in 1994 and 2007’s BUNCHA BEANS.
