Bloomfield, Indiana native Drew Auscherman of the band Hoops had already been in one lo-fi guitar pop band, Daguerreotype, with Jack Andrew when the duo decided to form Permit in 2016. Taking a step away from the chiming indie pop they made with Daguerreotype, the pair delved deep into their classic rock knowledge (especially Thin Lizzy and their dual-guitar attack), mixed it with some tape hiss, and sped it up until the RPMs reached dangerously high levels to come up with Permit's sound. Since Hoops were already signed to Fat Possum, the duo had an entry there, and the label released Permit's first single, Vol. 1, in December of 2016. ~ Tim Sendra
