About Steinski

One of the most influential pieces of early sampladelic hip-hop, “Lesson 1 - the Payoff Mix,” was the brainchild of former ad man/hip-hop aficionado Steve Stein (Steinski) and audio engineer Doug DiFranco (Double Dee). The track is a dizzying collage of early hip-hop, funk, and disco, along with a smattering of sound bites from older pop and soul, film dialogue, and 1950s-style instructional records. On the strength of song’s success, Tommy Boy released a series of three “Lessons” as a single, creating a vociferous backlash from the targeted sample-holders. The record was pulled from shelves but the Steinski legend grew amongst a generation of hip-hop producers, plunderphonic composers, and mash-up artists. In 2008, copyright baiters Illegal Art released a comprehensive collection of Steinski material titled WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? 1983-2006 RETROSPECTIVE.
