iAnnotate’s intuitive interface and customizable set of features make it the "go-to app" for taking notes on lecture slides, annotating important business documents, revising screenplays, grading papers, and much more. Read on to learn about the great capabilities of iAnnotate:
ANNOTATE: Choose from the pen, highlighter, typewriter, stamp, straight-line, note, underline, strikeout, photo, voice recording, and date stamp tools. Copy and paste annotations, even from one document to another.
CUSTOMIZE: Drag and drop the exact tools you need to create custom toolbars for your specific workflow. Switch between toolbars with a swipe, or open the Toolbar Drawer to edit your toolbars.
SCROLL: iAnnotate allows fast, continuous vertical scroll through an entire document. Other apps only let you view one page at a time, but iAnnotate gives you both options.
SEARCH: Use keywords to search the full text or filenames of every document downloaded to your Library, or limit your search to unread, annotated, or favorited documents to refine your results.
NAVIGATE: Open the Navigation Panel to explore your documents by thumbnails, bookmarks, annotations, or search results, and perform other common actions.
MULTITASK: iAnnotate lets you have up to eight documents open at once, and easily navigate between them for tabbed reading.
IMPORT: Connect with Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive or WebDAV, use iTunes file sharing, or open PDFs directly from email or the Web.
MANAGE: Arrange documents by folders and sort contents by date added, date last opened, or alphabetical order.
CREATE: Create brand new PDFs with blank, lined, or graph-paper pages.
MODIFY: Add, delete, rotate, and rearrange pages in your documents.
FLATTEN: Compress your annotations onto the document to prevent modification. This is useful for preserving signatures or for preventing recipients from deleting or changing your annotations.
SHARE: Annotations made in iAnnotate are fully integrated into the PDF and can be viewed and edited in external PDF readers like Adobe Acrobat or Mac Preview.
SUMMARIZE: Forward text summaries of a document's annotations in the body of an email. Summaries include the type of each annotation, relevant page numbers, and marked-up text.
SECURE: Full support for the iOS Data Protection and Keychain functions.
WATCH FOR UPDATES: With frequent updates and an attentive ear to our users, we are continuously improving iAnnotate. Stay tuned for even more new features to come!
What's New in Version 3.1.8
-Fixes problem with choppy scrolling in some situations
I wish I had found this sooner! Most of my teachers upload power points or PDFs and I have found that the best way to get the most out of lecture is to write notes beside the slides or frames they pertain to, especially because they're mainly pictures and diagrams and I'm a terrible artist. However, it was a lot of paper and money and a lot of material to carry around. So I would take my computer but that only worked with the power points and not the PDFs. Then I found this and it's PERFECT! I have been able to open everything from images that have been scanned to PDFs to pages from e-textbooks to pp files. I can draw, type, write, highlight, etc right on them. AND they are all in one place so as long as I have my iPad I have ALL of my notes. Some have complained about the handwriting but I haven't had too much trouble with a stylus. The typewriter is actually faster anyway so I just use the pencil tool to circle things sometimes. LOVE LOVE LOVE!
The only thing that would make this app better is if there was a version compatible with a Mac...just something to view my notes on the computer. But, it is easy to share the files so it's not a huge deal. I was apprehensive to spend $10 on an app but it was so worth it! 😍
Great, but doesn’t play well with OS Preview
This app has been absolutely fantastic for me in medical school. My only complaint (please fix!) is that the text from iAnnotate renders poorly in Preview (which I also use to take notes when on computer). Likewise, text added in Preview renders poorly in iAnnotate. By poorly I mean it’s not the clean vectorized text like the source program renders. It’s pixelated. And it’s very hard to edit the text made from another program. Does the text from iAnnotate not equate with the text from preview? It seems it should be a standardized text annotation in both cases, but they’re different. One other minor suggestion: many other students use Notability, and one thing I like about that is when using a stylus, it writes much better than with iAnnotate. Notability renders the stroke width based on the pressure, so at the end of letters, it thins out. iAnnotate seems to have a constant stroke width and does some slightly inaccurate spline fitting to render the line drawn. iAnnotate’s drawing (stylus) should be improved. If these two things are fixed, this app is far better than anything out there. Great job!
Update: app crashes often when just scrolling through PDFs from lecture presentations. This is very annoying so I've downgraded to three stars.
Lack of innovation
There seems to be a minor improvement on the hand writing engine. This improvement is rubbish is rounds everything. For example I like the V to be sharp at the bottom and not to look like a U. In general a zoom in writing function is missing. There is no option for merging pdfs and you cannot move or rename files synced with Dropbox. There hasn't been any change in features for a year now. The only thing that's amazing is the customisable toolbar which is indeed the only reason that stops me from moving to the competition. And even this feature needs improvement: When reinstalling iOS or when updating to a newer iPad the customised toolbar is lost. I am using 4 specific colours for highlighting, specific stamps etc. Configuring all this takes up to 10 minutes and isn't fun at all. Saving the toolbar in iCloud or in Dropbox cannot be too difficult to implement since syncing is already implemented. There is also an issue with the inbuilt "screenshot/ snipping tool" if you choose it you cannot cancel it anymore. When you click the cancel button nothing happens.
Edit: There not only is a lack of innovation but also the new update adds rendering problems especially when using several document parallel.
