Great News Radio App

I love NPR and this app is perfect for me. It's a convenient way to choose what stories to listen to. I love that they're sorted by time, topic, or program. I usually just add all of Morning Edition to the playlist when I get up and listen at my own pace while I get ready. It's so convenient, I just wish it were possible to download a few stories to listen to during my commute without using cellular data. I walk to work, so no car radio. And Morning Edition isn't available in downloadable podcast form, as far as I know which is unfortunate. Regardless, this app (combined with some other news podcasts and the NPR One app) gives me a general idea of what's going on in the world. I love it and highly recommend it.

I second what another review said about having to either individually add every story slowly or adding multiple days at a time. There should be a middle option for a quick list select view, or only adding the current day's stories to the playlist. If I listen to Morning Edition every day I don't need "add all to playlist" to add yesterday's stories too.

Another idea: A way to log in to the News app so the NPR One app knows which stories you already heard in News and won't play them again. I get the sense this app isn't the focus of the mobile team anymore, but it still has features that are valuable to many people. Please don't forget it. Please keep updating.

Superb, no gimmicky bells and whistles

I now have NPR and AP as my go-to news apps. Both are no frills, with focus on simple layouts for serious reading. Both have a crucial component that other news apps don't have...they both load all articles fully cached for offline reading; you don't even have to load each specific article, just the category. You have to click on each category to do this and all contained articles in the category fully load for offline...takes about a minute to load several categories when connected to wifi. Though as someone else mentioned occasionally it gives me an alert saying I have a slow connection when in fact I don't...I think it's a bug that needs fixing. Almost forgot to mention that when connected the radio stations and audio articles load fast and play back with excellent sound.

NPR great; app is lame. Update overdue.

It's 2015, the app is stuck in 2009.

The app could easily be thought out so much better, however, to minimize taps, and frustration. It's currently waaay too "tappy". And "freeze-y". NPR deserves better.

Why not one-tap playlisting?
Why no download option?
Why is the app so ugly?

The app doesn't allow for an easy manual FF or rewind through a segment. Using your finger to go back or forwards is hit or miss. Even a 30 sec. rewind button would be a thoughtful & welcome addition, just for a start, as would .5 and 1.5 speed options.

To go to the next track on a playlist (without later replaying the track you've forwarded past) requires editing your playlist, which is a tedious, multistep process. Forwarding to the next track from a Bluetooth device gets the same result. In these ways and many, many others the app gets in the way of the listening experience.

A major update is long overdue. Years long.

I wish NPR would devote some serious effort and resources and commit to the job of creating an excellent app using best audio app practices, worthy of the content. Make use of iPhone gestures Look at the way Stitcher does things, or the This American Life app does other things.

As a longtime listener and supporter, I feel that neither the iPhone app nor the web-based player are worthy reflections on the NPR brand, which is otherwise an intelligent and rare joy amongst the corporate media wasteland.
