Reseña de álbum

Ever thought an album title was too descriptive for its own good? This may be one. Steve MacLean's Frog Bug Guitar Computer consists of...frogs, bugs, guitar, and computer, which doesn't leave much in the matter of surprises. More precisely, the music is comprised of field recordings of frogs and insects, improvisations on acoustic guitar, and digital treatments of the aforementioned. Followers of MacLean (whose previous albums were rooted in a form of angular avant rock) may feel a little disoriented here, even though the guitarist had published tracks alluding to this kind of soundscaping before. Every track on this short album (38 minutes) features all four elements, and in most cases the original frog, bug, and guitar recordings are there. On top of these are clever, subtle, and tasteful computer manipulations designed to either push rhythmic features up front or to highlight harmonic underpinnings. The result sounds like a set of evening improvisations from the back porch of a country house, listened to with ears so sharp that the abundance of aural details occasionally turns into alluring auditory hallucinations. MacLean the guitarist is rather discreet on this release: his acoustic guitar playing aims at experimenting with the vast acoustic of open spaces and opening a dialogue with the noisy wildlife, so don't expect displays of virtuosity. However, his qualities as a composer have rarely shined so brightly. These short pieces are stripped down, very simple, and almost naïve in their approach to the nature sounds/computer treatments dichotomy. ~ François Couture, Rovi
