Reseña de álbum

Jelly Roll Morton recorded the selections in this compilation between 1928 and 1929 with various groups, though they have been reissued in various ways over the years. This CD, one of five remastered by John R.T. Davies, is notable for its bright sound without the utilization of excessive filtering to remove surface noise., made possible because the engineer used good, clean original source material. The result is music that likely sounds as good or better than when it was first sold on 78 rpm records. Among the standout musicians accompanying the pianist are clarinetist Russell Procope (who would go on to great fame as a longtime member of Duke Ellington's orchestra) in the lively "Red Hot Pepper" and bluesy "Deep Creek." Morton shows off his chops in four solo piano pieces, including the tricky "Freakish." In one session, the pianist borrows musicians from Luis Russell's band and they seem to have no problem with his compositions. Like other discs in the series, there is only one take of any given song on this CD, with alternates to be found on other volumes.
