For a band that only released four albums, the Style Council's body of work has lent itself to no less than ten compilations, most of which are, at the very least, acceptable entry points for potential listeners and singles-oriented fans. Spectrum's Sweet Loving Ways: The Collection is up there with Cafe Blue: The Style Council Cafe Best and the Singular Adventures of the Style Council, hitting all of the high points from Paul Weller's divisive post-Jam project while tossing in the occasional rarity and remix.

Guitarist/vocalist Paul Weller broke up the Jam, the most popular British band of the early '80s, at the height of their success in 1982 because he was dissatisfied with their musical direction. Weller wanted to incorporate more elements of soul, R&B, and jazz into his songwriting, which is something he felt his punk-oriented bandmates were incapable of performing.
