About Angel Olsen

“I like being 100 percent myself,” Angel Olsen told Apple Music in conversation about her 2019 song “Tonight”, adding, “I’m just working on not making myself smaller for anyone.” Over the arc of Olsen’s career, she has become more loudly, more ferociously herself in the realm of her grand, baroque pop. But Olsen, born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1987, was herself from the start. After working as a backup singer with songwriter Will Oldham on a couple of Bonnie “Prince” Billy albums, Olsen released her debut EP in 2010. The spectral folk of Strange Cacti laid the foundation for a body of work that frequently evokes supernaturality, primarily through Olsen’s nimble, fluttering and forceful voice. Subsequent releases pointed toward bigger visions: while her first full-length, 2012’s Half Way Home offered crisp, country and pop-indebted Americana (“Free”), her 2014 breakthrough, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, was her first record to feature a full band, and songs like “Windows” offered a slightly more fleshed-out sound for her dramatic songwriting. With 2016’s MY WOMAN, she exploded into sophisticated, textured pop (the lush “Sister”) and in 2019, All Mirrors found her using synths and symphonic elements, recording with a 14-piece orchestra to build grand songs like the wondrous “Lark”. She followed it up in 2020 with Whole New Mess, rendering songs from All Mirrors in more intimate, quieter arrangements, making her sound—but not herself—smaller for the first time in years.
