Els Pets are one of the few surviving bands from the short-lived early-'90s phenomenon known as rock català, or Catalan rock. Defined by their love of '60s English pop and soul music, their records are straightforward, uninhibited, and joyful. The band recorded their first cassette demo in 1986 and the spontaneous success of those first homemade recordings allowed Els Pets to self-finance their eponymous debut in 1989. With two more albums released by 1992, a surge in sales earned them the Most Popular Band Award from Radio 4 and consolidated them as standard bearers of rock català. Success followed Els Pets through the '90s and 2000s and they kept up their signature style, though adding more lavish arrangements to their simple verse-chorus-verse approach. ~ Efrén del Valle Peñamil
