This colored ebook focuses deep into the absence of foresighted policy measures and non-adherence to legislations, which affect urban sprawl in turn deteriorating its urban functionality. The book deals with the study of Udaipur city and the adjacent sixty seven villages named as the Udaipur Urbanizing Region (UUR), a territory of 508.75 sq. km. Study is conducted using extensive census database, field work, qualitative studies and Landsat and LISS imagery.


The physico-cultural base of the region is determined and analyzed in the GIS environs. LISS and Landsat imagery are used to understand the process of urban sprawl taking place from 1972 to 2004. Field survey and ground verifications have helped to analyze inter and intra-infrastructural development taking place in the region. Lastly, Land Suitability is carried out using Spatial Analyst Arc View GIS by weighted overlay method. On the basis of this futuristic model of urban growth is proposed. The recommendations include re-strengthening the existing system includes institutional and financial approach, housing reforms, innovative planning, tourism management, paradigm shift in the planning mechanism, legislative procedures and information technologies.
