Black Country Communion

Black Country Communion

Black Country Communion was spawned in 2009 by blues rocker Joe Bonamassa, Deep Purple singer/bass player Glen Hughes, drummer Jason Bonham and Dream Theatre’s Derek Sherinian during a concert held for Guitar Center — so it’s easy to assume that their sound is suited specifically for musicians, but BCC is quite accessible, especially if you dig heavy ‘70s Southern rock like Black Oak Arkansas, ZZ Top, and Mountain. An onslaught of bass riffs introduces “Black Country” before Bonamassa mirrors the leads over thundering drumbeats that seem to say, “Hey man, my dad was in Led Zeppelin!” But it’s Hughes’ bell-bottomed wailing that completes the sound — his voice is so commanding and pitch-perfect. “One Last Soul” cranks up the '90s distortion to birth a post-grunge tune that sounds ideal for radio, and there’s no denying that it’s one of the catchiest tunes here.
