Editors’ Notes

One Emotion contains two of Clint Black’s best collaborations in “Untanglin’ My Mind” and “You Made Me Feel.” The former is a stately ballad that employs the ageless voice of Merle Haggard, while the latter is a jazzy, slinky love song co-written by Michael McDonald. Between those two influences you can track the genealogy of Black’s style. He is old-school simplicity crossed with metropolitan sophistication. “Summer’s Comin’” is the ideal country pop song, a seamless merger of razor-sharp playing and sugary sweet hooks. To boot, “Wherever You Go” and “Life Gets Away” are slightly gentler exponents of the same principle. “Hey Hot Rod” may veer too far into generic boogie territory, but Black compensates for it with “You Walked By” and “I Can Get By,” brisk tunes that are fueled by the singer’s longstanding affection for bluegrass and Western Swing. One Emotion is the rare combination of neo-traditionalist values and revisionist touches. Like George Strait he has maintained his integrity through commitment to a core set of values, but like Garth Brooks he embraces new styles as a means of artistic evolution.

He offered a shiny, marketable version of traditional country and in the process paved the way for a new generation of...
