If you didn't know any better, by just listening to the beginning of Machinemade God's 2007 release, Masked, you'd think that you're in for an album of the proggiest prog metal. But be careful — there's a metal behemoth lurking around the corner. Thus is the case throughout the album — the aforementioned track ("Forgiven"), as well as "With You," which includes both death metal screaming and melodic crooning (as well as a Tool-esque spoken word part that comes in from out of nowhere). And just when you think you have this German band figured out, along come calm and cool instrumentals like "Who, If Not Us?" and "Even Though You're Gone." But despite these momentary lapses, Machinemade God are true metalheads — take such vintage Metallica ragers as "Damage Inc." or "Dyers Eve" and crank them up a few more notches, and you'll have an idea of what "For Those Who Care" and "Vengeance" sound like. Make no mistake about it — Machinemade God's Masked contains some mighty fierce metal.
