This Vogue CD is a bit unusual: rather than featuring the masterful soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet in his usual Dixieland settings, it contains his original music for two ballets as performed by a pair of symphony orchestras. "La Nuit Est Une Sorciere" from 1953, after some narration in French, has the orchestra playing dramatic themes with a few token appearances by Bechet himself. "La Colline Du Delta," a lively tribute to Louisiana, was recorded posthumously in 1964 with Claude Luter (a close Sidney Bechet disciple) in Bechet's place; Luter gets to stretch out a bit. Overall this is an interesting, but not essential, set.

Sidney Bechet was the first important jazz soloist on records in history (beating Louis Armstrong by a few months).
