About John Surman
One of the key figures in contemporary jazz, John Surman is a resourceful improviser who is equally adept on soprano, tenor and baritone saxophones, bass clarinet, bamboo flutes and synthesizers. He was twice voted the World’s Best Baritone Saxophone Player by Melody Maker readers, and Top Instrumentalist at the 1968 Montreux International Jazz Festival. During the '70s, Surman worked with John McLaughlin, Terje Rypdal and Jack DeJohnette. In 1981, Surman released the magnificently sparse, THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF SIMON SIMON, possibly his finest work. In the early '90s he recorded with John Abercrombie and Marc Johnson, although it was his solo work later in the decade that was particularly inspired, notably 1994's STRANGER THAN FICTION.
