Not the complete recordings of Junior Byles by a long shot, but the best collection of his solo material currently on the market. All of the solo hits are here as well as a good amount of previously unreleased material and outtakes. The revelatory tracks include "A Place Called Africa" and "Informer Man" both of which show off the richness of Byles' voice and the astute and sympathetic production offered by Lee "Scratch" Perry. Roots/riddim singing in a fine style, this is where to go to get your first sampling of this vastly underrated reggae singer.

One of Jamaica's most tragic figures, Junior Byles was also one of the island's greatest root stars. His vocals were quite unique, and although his soft, almost husky voice would never ring from the rafters nor give voice to anger, the gentle timbre still expressed deep emotions. His was the voice of the meek and was all the stronger for it. The closest comparison is perhaps with the vulnerable tones of Slim Smith, but while the former Unique made his mark with love songs, Byles would speak not for...
