Avis sur l’album

This highly explosive Edwin Starr compilation contains nearly every significant track by the soul singer, including his best Ric Tic recordings': "Stop Her on Sight," "Back Street," "Headline News," and "Agent OO Soul." Features "Soul Master," the super cool title track from his debut Motown LP. Known as a screamer and shouter at Motown, these 18 tracks support that assessment. A monster in the studio under producer Norman Whitfield, Starr's powerful vocals' push unmercifully on "25 Miles," "Cloud Nine," "You've Got My Soul on Fire," "Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On," and "Way Over There." "War" and "Stop the War Now," two anti-war songs, are fused together — it gets so good you'll be making peace signs as they play. "There You Go," a smooth beat ballad, is the mellowest track and seems out of place among these funky tracks. Would have preferred "Big Poppa" to the jaunty "Gonna Keep on Trying Till I Win Your Love," which works better as a ballad. A fine collection of Starr's most prolific years.

Starr first made his name as "Agent Double-O-Soul," and when his contract was transferred to Motown, he instantly became one of the roughest, toughest vocalists on the crossover-friendly label, with his debt to James Brown and the Stax soul shouters. Even if nothing else ever matched the phenomenon...
