Avis sur l’album

Columbia Records first compiled a "best of" collection for Mahalia Jackson in 1976 with the subtitle "Hymns, Spirituals & Songs of Inspiration." This 20-track version was available on two LPs and features many songs not on any other compilation, raising the question of how the "best" of an artist's catalog is determined. For example, there are only two songs in common with the 1995 CD of the same title and three in common with 1996's 16 Most Requested Songs. Half of the songs here were not even included among the 67 on 1991's Gospels, Spirituals & Hymns volumes one or two! This is perhaps because some songs on this collection are from Jackson's more pop-friendly later years. Highlights include "Bless This House" and three songs with an orchestra and/or choir conducted by Percy Faith ("In the Garden," "The Holy City," and "Rock of Ages"). The rare best songs here are all good recordings and inspired performances. This out of print best-of collection is rare gem and a must for Mahalia Jackson fans.

With her singularly expressive contralto, Jackson continues to inspire the generations of vocalists who follow in her wake; among the first spiritual performers to introduce elements of...
