J.C. Lodge's teasing, lithe sound has made her one of the 1990s' top female reggae singers; her coy, suggestive leads have proven quite potent commercially. This nine-track session was recorded before she became a star, and while there's a preponderance of synthesizers and electronic backing, it's less busy and heavily produced than her recent material. Lodge is mostly creditable, although the cover of "You Can't Hurry Love" is disposable, and "You Can Dance" and her version of The Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody" strictly generic. But "Stick By Me," "Stalemates" and "You Make Me Shine" demonstrate the potential other producers have since tapped.
