About Derek Bailey
British guitarist Derek Bailey was a towering figure in the avant-garde music world. Though he was often lumped in with the free-jazz crowd--and had certainly done plenty of work with jazz musicians--his music transcends genre and can ultimately be described only as improvisational. Bailey's aesthetic encompasses world music, jazz, contemporary classical, and more. Starting in the early 1970s, he recorded a tremendous body of work in collaboration with a long list of heavyweights including Steve Lacy, John Zorn, Evan Parker, and Henry Kaiser. His scrupulous deconstruction of the musical rulebook proved him to have been not merely a rebel, but also a visionary with an almost scientifically disciplined method to his madness. Bailey died in 2005.
