The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) conducted its first women s ice hockey championship in 2001 for Divisions I and III. Division II currently does not host a championship. In the 2000-2001 academic year, 63 schools began sponsoring varsity women's ice hockey teams, with approximately 1380 participants. By 2003-2004, the number of varsity teams had increased 10% to 69, involving 1600 participants. (1) This sport is evolving, and data must be interpreted with caution because only 4 years of data were available. SAMPLING AND METHODS
