Description du cours

This learning pathway provides a well-rounded look at the ideas, technologies and collaborations that underpin sustainable communities. It sets the context by focusing on the carbon footprint as a measure of individual and collective impact. It then looks at the design of an eco house, and moves up in scale to consider cases studies of three relatively small but highly successful community initiatives in Britain and on the Danish island of Samsoe. Through these examples it explores innovative design and technology, and also illuminates what attitude shifts are necessary for communities to embrace sustainable living.

The crucial emphasis on collaboration for managed sustainability through communities is explored in two comprehensive video-led case studies of sustainable forestry initiatives in Himachel Pradesh, India, and Abriachan Forest, Scotland. It also looks at the way business can interact with community initiatives to the mutual benefit of both, and finally touches on the role of government in driving sustainability.

The pathway is not a blueprint for a sustainable lifestyle, but a platform designed to shape further exploration of the ideas that underpin sustainable communities.
