Description

On October 29th 2012, the HEC Paris Social Business/Enterprise and Poverty Chair organized a conference on the campus with Professor Muhammad Yunus, Bangladeshi banker, 2006 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, HEC Paris Honoris Causa Professor and co-president of the Chair. "The relationship between firms and poverty has deeply evolved over the last years: both the search for new markets and the maturity of CSR policies have contributed to an increasing corporate interest in poor populations. Corporate led initiatives to alleviate poverty are diverse but we see a common thread emerging: poverty alleviation cannot be considered anymore as a philanthropic activity, but should be tackled through market-based approaches." says Frederic Dalsace associate professor of Marketing and holder of the Social Business/Enterprise and Poverty Chair. The conference, entitled "How can firms help alleviate poverty?" attracted a packed crowd to listen to young social business entrepreneurs, corporate and government representatives, and Professor Yunus debate the solution. The event was co-organized with a dynamic group of young entrepreneurs, the "Youth We Can" network. Together with Martin Hirsch, the former French High Commissioner for Active Solidarity against Poverty and Prof. Yunus, Frederic Dalsace and Olivier Maurel, Social Innovation & Animation Manager at danone.communities, spotlighted 5 social businesses while welcoming on stage representatives from two large companies, Schneider Electric and Renault, as well as three young entrepreneurs from Macadam Journal, Spear and Fedecovera. Launched in 2008 the HEC Paris Social Business/Enterprise and Poverty Chair seeks to promote social business by an action that is threefold: a) Teaching: training a new generation of managers, aware of societal challenges and who aspire to be part of the solution, regardless of thier professional activity, b) Research: developing quality research on strategic innovation in societal fields on the theme of social business, and the ways in which business can fight poverty, c) Action-research: Contributing to an inclusive economy, in France and in other developed countries as well as in developing countries. This initiative brings together HEC academics, large firms, government members and heads of the non-profit organizations with the objective of alleviating poverty through business. www.hec.edu/social-business-chair
