iTunes Review

This impressive double album showcases Prince’s virtuosity as both a songwriter and a musician. He brings muscular pop-rock to “Little Red Corvette”, drops a synth-funk anthem in “D.M.S.R.” and plays chicken-scratch guitar over the eight-minute groove of “Lady Cab Driver”. His edgy sexual bravado is matched by a pervasive sense of alienation, underscored by robotic production on tracks like “Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)”. Still, on apocalyptic party track “1999”, he affirms that even in the face of a nuclear extinction, the human spirit will endure.

Take a heavy dose of R&B, add a sprinkling of early 80s electronica, throw in a couple of beautiful falsetto ballads and mix it all up with a whole heap of funk. The result is this fantastic album. Some of Prince's most atmospheric songs are here, including Little Red Corvette and my personal fave, Automatic.

During the '80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Not only did he release a series of groundbreaking albums; he toured frequently, produced albums, and wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults. With each album he released, Prince showed remarkable stylistic growth...
