Album Review

The Marine Girls' complete studio output is included on the superb Lazy Ways/Beach Parties two-fer; although Tracey Thorn went on to even bigger and better things as one half of Everything But the Girl, her previous group's light, sophisticated pop remains utterly beguiling, as evidenced by such enduring performances as "Love to Know."

Customer Reviews

Wonderful

1. There are three of them, none of them musicians.

2. The songs sound like they were recorded in a bedroom on a Casio tape recorder.

3. These are all just brilliant songs about being a teenager and wondering what love and life are all about. It's so rare to hear music that captures emotions so crystal clear it becomes a paradigm in itself. It's witty, cynical when it needs to be, wistful and naive when it doesn't. One track from this album is worth ten thousand X-Factor contestants with pitch-perfect voices and not much to say.

4. I value these albums at twenty times the iTunes price. Fans of Jose Gonzalez, The Knife and Hole will love this, I'm sure.

Genius is overused......

.. however. This CD which brings together the two Marine Girls studio albums is a stunning reminder, to this listener at least, of how great they were. Listening again 30 years after buying the first LP recorded, lets not forget, in a shed, I'm taken back to the vibrant post punk era of 1981-82 and just what it was that hooked me all those years ago. Twee, schoolgirl strummings right? Wrong, wrong, wrong! Sophisticated time signatures, lyrics that are at once confessional and heartfelt, the next like beat poetry, challenging yet immeasurably rewarding. The depth of emotional intelligence shown by these girls, as they were when they recorded the first (and IMHO) best album must have scared their male classmates witless. The Marine Girls were and ARE a treasure, buried in the sand and broken seashells that will keep astonishing people for years. If you don't yet have this recording what on earth are you waiting for? Jane, Alice, Tracy, thank you.

Biography

Formed: 1980 in Hertfordshire, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s

Before Tracey Thorn established herself with Everything but the Girl, she produced mellow, spare indie pop with the all-female act the Marine Girls. Inspired by the Raincoats and the Young Marble Giants, Thorn formed the Marine Girls with her schoolmate Gina and Jane Fox in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England, in 1980. At first, Thorn played guitar with Gina on vocals and Fox on bass. Since they knew no drummers, the group decided to focus on a minimalist approach to music. After Gina kept missing rehearsals,...
