iTunes Review

Chillier and more ethereal than the charred Unknown Pleasures, Joy Division's second and final studio album tore a jagged hole through post-punk convention, as dirges like "Atrocity Exhibition" rubbed elbows with manic, synth-streaked dance-floor cuts like "Isolation". Dripping with echo, Martin Hannett's production gleams like a freshly polished tombstone. Late frontman Ian Curtis is the music's aching centre of gravity, by turns unhinged, dejected and resigned. To hear the album is to mourn what might have been—and celebrate what was.

Customer Reviews

One of THE Great albums.... plus more live rubbish

Moving away from the gothic terror of Unknown Pleasures, Closer is just that, the edge, the end, the dark, are closer to the surface here... Side one sounds like the follow up to UP, Opening with Atrocity Exhibition, it is UP perfected... except for the awkward Isolation... Then comes side two.... Understated, stark, and ultimately terrifying. Heart and Soul hurts.... Decades departs.... Closer is about life, from a voice that, by the time we heard the album, had left us... Crucial. Possibly the best album ever recorded by a Manchester band. The live stuff on here? - Poor bootleg, best ignored. Sorry, but it adds nothing to JD's legacy, and some of it is, frankly, embarassingly bad.

Everyone should have a copy of this album

A real classic and captures the spirit of Joy Division as they were hitting their peak. And indeed as Ian sadly falls apart. Download it now.

This is a must have Joy Division Album presenting some of their best tracks, from atrocity exhibition to the eternal and most importantly a live version of love will tear us apart. Buy it from i tunes if you will, but this beauty deserves a place in your cd trophy cabinet! The best band ever

Years Active: '70s, '80s

Formed in the wake of the punk explosion in England, Joy Division became the first band in the post-punk movement by later emphasizing not anger and energy but mood and expression, pointing ahead to the rise of melancholy alternative music in the '80s. Though the group's raw initial sides fit the bill for any punk band, Joy Division later incorporated synthesizers (taboo in the low-tech world of '70s punk) and more haunting melodies, emphasized by the isolated, tortured lyrics of its lead vocalist,...
