Album Review

Abandoned Luncheonette, Hall & Oates' second album, was the first indication of the duo's talent for sleek, soul-inflected pop/rock. It featured the single "She's Gone," which would become a big hit in 1975 when it was re-released following the success of "Sara Smile."

Customer Reviews

one of the best albums of all-time

Forget any prejudices about Hall & Oates - this album is truly soulful and undeniably cool, as one would except from an Arif Mardin production. The musicianship is incredible and the songwriting even more so. The first five songs are flawless. Only the rather long closing track could be surplus to requirements. Opening track When The Morning Comes is so simple and concise, with a lyric full of yearning and mystery.

Early H and O developing nicely!

If you're used to 80's Hall and Oates this probably won't be what you might expect. Having said that, this is a classic, showing the emerging talents of Daryl Hall as a songwriter and with some great vocal harmonies from the duo.It contains the classic 'She's Gone' with the great sax solo, but has some other excellent tracks. The album is quite varied-you can see how the pop/soul developed from this. When you feel low, listen to the opener-'When the morning comes' guaranteed to cheer you up! As an intro to their early work this is a good starting place. Tracks 1-5 are the better tracks the final four tracks (that were side two on the vinyl release) take a few listens to get into although are lyrically more interesting, if not as melodic. My favourite track would be the opening track-'When the morning comes'-the sort of song that can make you feel good again in the face of adversity.

Abandoned Luncheonette

I forgot about this album but heard "She's Gone" on th radio recently to remind me off this superb record. Forget "maneater" and "I Can't Go For That" (I definately can't) - this is more Steeley Dan and is excellent for it.

From their first hit in 1974 through their heyday in the '80s, Daryl Hall and John Oates' smooth, catchy take on Philly soul brought them enormous commercial success -- including six number one singles and six platinum albums. Hall & Oates' music was remarkably well constructed and produced; at their best, their songs were filled with strong hooks and melodies that adhered to soul traditions without being a slave to them, incorporating elements of new wave and hard rock. Daryl Hall began performing...
