Album Review

This CD from the Japanese DIW label, which was made available domestically for a time by Columbia, is not really world music, but advanced hard bop. Pianist Geoff Keezer, a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers at the time, teams up with bassist James Genus, drummer Tony Reedus and sometimes percussionist Rudy Bird on a high-quality set of swinging modern mainstream music. The set ranges from "It's Only a Paper Moon" and "Black and Tan Fantasy" to "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair" and originals by Keezer, Thad Jones, Mulgrew Miller and James Williams. A fine release worth searching for.

Geoff Keezer was only 17 when he became the last pianist in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1988-1990), a perfect gig for the talented hard bop musician who fit right in with the tradition of Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Cedar Walton, James Williams, and Benny Green. Since Blakey's death, Keezer has recorded steadily as a leader for Sunnyside, Blue Note, DIW/Columbia, and Sackville and played on records led by Art Farmer, Roy Hargrove, and Antonio Hart, among others.
